Maccy is a simple, reliable app, and most reported problems trace back to one of a handful of causes — almost always a missing permission or a shortcut conflict rather than a bug. Here's how to fix each one.

Maccy isn't recording anything

This is by far the most common issue, and it's almost always a missing Accessibility permission.

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
  2. Check that Maccy is listed and the toggle next to it is switched on.
  3. If it's not listed at all, click the + button, navigate to Applications, and add Maccy manually.
  4. Quit and reopen Maccy after granting permission — it needs a fresh launch to pick up the change.

The shortcut doesn't open history

If Cmd+Shift+V does nothing, another app or system feature is likely intercepting that combination first.

  • Open Maccy's preferences and check what shortcut is currently assigned — it may have reset to something else.
  • Try remapping it to a less commonly used combination, like Cmd+Shift+M, directly in Maccy's settings.
  • Check System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts for a system-level shortcut using the same keys, which always takes priority over an app's shortcut.

Menu bar icon is missing

If your menu bar is crowded, Maccy's icon can get pushed off-screen by other menu bar apps. Try removing or consolidating other menu bar icons (hold Cmd and drag icons to rearrange them), or check Maccy's preferences for an option to hide or show the menu bar icon — it may have been toggled off accidentally.

It opens but won't paste

If the history popup opens and lets you select an item, but nothing actually gets pasted into the app behind it, this is almost always also an Accessibility permission issue — Maccy needs that permission specifically to simulate the paste keystroke, not just to read the clipboard. Re-check the Accessibility list as described above, and remove and re-add Maccy if toggling it doesn't help.

Stopped working after a macOS update

Major macOS updates occasionally reset Accessibility permissions for all apps as a security measure. If Maccy worked before an update and stopped afterward, that permission reset is the most likely cause — re-grant it following the steps above.

Resetting Maccy completely

If nothing above resolves it, a clean reinstall usually does: quit Maccy, delete it from Applications, remove its preferences (typically under ~/Library/Preferences, named with Maccy's bundle identifier), then reinstall the latest version from the official site and re-grant Accessibility access from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Maccy not recording my clipboard history?

This is almost always a missing Accessibility permission. Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, make sure Maccy is listed and enabled, then quit and reopen the app.

Why won't Maccy paste after I select an item?

Pasting requires the same Accessibility permission as recording, since Maccy needs it to simulate a paste keystroke. Re-check that permission first if selection works but pasting doesn't.
